Most items on the scholarship application forms are self-explanatory. However, the following instructions and comments will assist you in providing the requested information.

Before you begin to fill in the forms, be sure that you understand what information is being requested. It is advisable to prepare your response in draft form before entering them on the application. Remember what you say is a reflection on your intellectual ability.

The following dates are important. Use them as a checklist in the application process:

• February 28th Deadline for submission of The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke  Oven Association “Jim Richardson Memorial” Scholarship. (FORM A)
• February 28th Deadline for submission of High School Certification (FORM B) and High School Recommendation (FORM C).

NOTE:
There are many forms of financial aid available and if you are not familiar with your state’s student financial aid program or with federal aid programs, consult with your counselor. Take advantage of any available state and federal financial assistance in addition to scholarships from private sources.

Form A (Application for Scholarship)

• Item 5
  If you have not decided on which colleges you prefer, indicate those that are your
  most likely choices, or indicate “Undecided.
  
• Item 6 
  If you are unable to respond, write ‘Undecided”.
  
• Essay  
  Since there is no personal interview, this short essay (400-500 words) is an important means for you to communicate with the Scholarship Committee. Be as creative as you wish. Review of your essay will cover logical presentation, clarity of expression, creativity, good grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

SAT Date

If you have already taken the SAT, indicate the date in the space provided. (Be sure that The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association receives a copy of your scores). If you intend to take the test at a later time, enter the date.
