Scholarships

The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association “Jim Richardson Memorial” Scholarship Plan is established for children of members of the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association. The merit scholarship is awarded to current high school seniors to recognize high academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and future potential. The awards are intended to assist those selected to attend the college or university of their choice and to realize their academic and career objectives.

Eligibility

Any child, stepchild, legal ward or legally adopted child of a member of The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, with at least two years of continuous membership (except members of the current board), is eligible to apply for The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association “Jim Richardson Memorial” Scholarship.

Stipend

Awards are in the amount of $2,000. A minimum of one award may be made each year on a nonrenewable basis to freshmen entering an approved institution of higher learning for the Fall Semester of the year in which the award is given.

Application

Prospective applicants must submit the Application for Scholarship (FORM A, B, & C) to the Scholarship Chairman of The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, via the online application or through e-mail.  Deadline for applications is February 28th.

Selection

Completed applications and related materials will be reviewed by a Scholarship Committee which will select winners based on high school record, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores, leadership in school and in the community and future academic and career potential.

Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship Committee consists of four highly qualified professionals from the field of education. The committee members will select the scholarship winners and will counsel The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association Board of Directors on scholarship administration matters. There will be no member of the Board of Directors or member of The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association directly involved in the selection of scholarship winners.

Use of Awards

The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association “Jim Richardson Memorial Scholarship” may be used at any accredited university, college, junior college or technical institution in the United States, at similar educational institutions outside of the United States or at an unaccredited institution that is approved by the Scholarship Committee. The institution attended must maintain a regular faculty and curriculum and have an organized body of students in attendance.

Payments

Scholarship payments are made by The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association Board of Directors in July- August. Checks can be made payable to the selected scholarship award recipient or mailed directly to the college or university attended by the student.  To initiate payment, award recipients must send The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association Secretary/Treasurer a copy of their official notice of registration.  Scholarship award recipients will be responsible for any tax liabilities related to the award.

Interruptions

In case of illness, military service or other temporary interruptions of studies for personal or financial reasons, The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association “Jim Richardson Memorial Scholarship” may be temporarily discontinued, subject to reinstatement at a future date. The recipient must filly explain the circumstances in writing and request that the scholarship be temporarily withheld. At the appropriate time, written request can be made to The Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association for reinstatement if the student left his previous institution in ‘GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING” as defined by the college or institution. In cases where a scholarship is discontinued due to academic failure, or for disciplinary reasons, the student’s stipend cannot be reinstated until one fill semester or quarter is completed “IN GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING” as described by the college or institution.
